Newfoundland dogs require specific care and attention; therefore, before buying a puppy, you must carefully study the breed standard and maintenance requirements. Finding a responsible and reputable breeder is vital, because this rules out the possibility of purchasing a faulty or afflicted species.
Do not purchase puppies at pet stores or from so called 'puppy mills'. A puppy mill is a completely buck-oriented person, who keeps large amounts of dogs and puppies and sells them exclusively for prosperity reasons. If you randomly buy a puppy from such a person, you are very likely to acquire a low quality puppy, which will not be able to live up to the breed standard, to say nothing of receiving any show ring status whatsoever.
Puppy mills hold their pups in numerous backyard cages, which can in no way provide sound and healthy living. You cannot hypothetically offer proper and qualified feeding, care or veterinary assistance to many animals at once, and this inevitably affects the dogs' temperament and disposition.
In order to avoid dealing with puppy mills, there are several rules you must follow. When visiting your breeder's place, pay attention to the number of puppies and their overall condition. True breeders never keep many species, and they deal in only one or two breeds. Take a look at the puppies themselves. They should not be too shy or wary. If they are, this may be the result of maltreatment.
Check the overall condition in the house. Is it tidy or dirty? The environment is a decisive factor in animal's health, and it also reflects the breeder's true attitude to the cause of dog breeding. A respectful breeder will go all out to provide safe and healthy living for his/her dogs.
True breeders are never shy about telling buyers about drawbacks or health problems, which may have occurred down the pedigree line. What a true breeder is after is maintaining the breed's good condition on a global scale; therefore he/she will never sell a faulty species even though this may be largely disadvantageous to them.
Good breeders have all necessary documentation, which should include veterinary certificates, show ring documents and inoculation accounts. There also must be respective documents related to previous generations. A responsible breeder will never sell a puppy to you without scanning you for adaptability and true attitude toward dog keeping. Newfoundland dogs need a lot of specific care and attention, and the breeder won't sell his/her puppy, should he/she consider you unfit to have one.
