The origin of the breed is unknown. The breed we know today was developed in Great Britain, and major breeding projects were launched after World War I. Similar dogs were mentioned in writings by Vikings and Basque fishermen, who visited Newfoundland around 1000 AD.

kennels, kennel
This breed is in no way related to the St. Bernard, although he did contribute his gene to save the St. Bernard around 1860, when distemper decimated the St. Bernard. These two breeds look alike because they are intended for similar purposes. See newfoundland pictures at various kennels; every reliable kennel keeps pictures of the foundation stock.
